BT0001 Sendai City
320 people evacuated to Arahama Elementary School when the Great East Japan Earthquake struck on March 11, 2011. The following tsunami surged up to the 2nd floor of the school. A visit to the school building that has been preserved in its damaged state, as well as through seeing the exhibited photographs taken right after the disaster, participants will be able to clearly recognize the power and the threat of a tsunami.
Participants can see the damaged school building from outside as well as photographs taken immediately after the disaster on the 1st and the 2nd floors. On the 4th floor, where participants can see photographs and videos of the disaster in chronological order:the time the earthquake occurred, the evacuation, the moment when the tsunami hit, and the time of rescue. The history and culture of Arahama, Sendai City is also introduced, alongside various memoires about the area. On the rooftop, participants can compare the landscape – The current state and the state before the disaster.
To enhance participants' awareness of disaster preparedness risk reduction, participants will learn about the terror of the tsunami which hit Arahama Elementary School and about preparation for disasters.
