The stone monument is currently stored in a warehouse near the southern gate of the former Tagajo Castle. On its 196cm tall, 92cm wide face, it has 141 characters noting the distance from the "Heijo-kyo" in Nara, distances to each border, and about the construction and repair of Tagajo Castle. Known as the "pot monument" in the Utamakura poem, haiku poet Matsuo Basho visited this location during the Edo period and described his deep impressions of the monument in his work Narrow Road to the Deep North.
