Area of post-Great East Japan Earthquake reconstruction & recovery where evacuation hills, tsunami evacuation buildings, seawalls and various other tsunami prevention facilities were built. Learn about disaster mitigation and prevention through storytellers and by seeing the recovery firsthand.

Memoire de Yuriage Tsunami Recovery Memorial Museum
Since its opening in spring 2012, it has worked with disaster affected people to serve as a base of emotional support and continues to share memories of the disaster and the importance of life. Through storytellers, materials, and images, you can see the people who lived through disaster.

Millennium Hope Hills
A chain of 6 parks and garden paths stretching 10km along the coast constructed on land that is no longer inhabitable after the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami. By linking the hills and roads (a green coastal tide embankment), they serve as a break to lessen the force of future tsunamis and function as evacuation sites in the event of a disaster. In addition, the soil used in the hills is made of tsunami debris, remnants of the lives of people living in the area. The result is a memorial park that preserves and disseminates memories of the disaster and lessons learned from it, both domestically and internationally, and serves as a place for disaster-mitigation education.
